The name Imperia comes from the Impero (Empire) torrent, which flows nearby the former residential sites of Oneglia and Porto (Harbour) Maurizio. The two towns, divided by centuries-old rivalry, were joined together in 1923 as a single Municipal District. On this Riviera the colours of the sea get mixed with the fragrances of the mediterranean vegetation, thanks to a particularly mild climate. Striking views appear from the promenades running amongst big african palms and the old villas and medieval small steep roads facing the promontories. Parasio, Porto Maurizio's old town center, lies on a fascinating hill close to the coast where medieval buildings, baroque churches, loggias with a fine view over the sea and the typical “caruggio” (narrow roads) reaching the highest squares meet in a pleasant contraposition. In the restaurants you'll find the great tradition of the olive oil which enriches with taste the local cuisine based on fish and vegetables. A museum dedicated to the various stages of the production of extra-virgin olive oil and to its centuries-old history is worth a visit, as well as the other historical and naturalistic beauties of the territory. Art, history and traditional culture live together with worldiness of various restaurants nearby the coast and the shopping spots, amongst shops selling wine and high quality food and well known fashionable shops downtown. Beaches and shores are well equipped for first class bathing holidays. |
